Bonded Seals Product & Material Information A bonded seal consists of a metal washer with a vulcanized elastomer sealing element bonded to its inner diameter. The metal washer provides mechanical support and limits deformation of the elastomer under compression and pressure. Both the washer material and the elastomer compound can be selected to suit a given application. (Fig.1) Function When the joint is tightened, the elastomer sealing element is compressed between the metal washer and the mating surfaces, creating a reliable static seal. The metal washer controls elastomer deformation and provides mechanical support under pressure. Design Variants 0xx Series - Standard Bonded Seal: Standard bonded seal with a vulcanized elastomer sealing element. 8xx Series - Self-Centring Bonded Seal: Incorporates an additional elastomer centring membrane to assist positioning during assembly. Material Component Material / specification Metal washer Zinc-plated carbon steel Metal washer Stainless steel Elastomer NBR Elastomer FKM Elastomer HNBR Elastomer EPDM Material combinations and compound specifications depend on product type, size and application. Compound- specific material data and test documentation are available on request. Burst Pressures Burst pressure values shown in the dimensional tables are reference values associated with the specified seal design and material configuration. Actual pressure capability depends on the complete joint design, materials, dimensions, mating surfaces and installation conditions. Dimensions Dimensions and tolerances are shown in the relevant product tables. Please contact STEMA for confirmation of dimensions and tolerances for critical applications. Recommended Counter Surface Ra <= 3.2 µm | Rmax <= 15 µm Specials Additional sizes, materials and special configurations may be available on request. Please contact STEMA with your application requirements. 1 STEMA Bonded Seals Technical Catalogue

ELASTOMER COMPOUNDS DOCUMENTED MATERIAL DATA HYDROGENATED NITRILE RUBBER (HNBR) Compound Ref.: CHR-HN-002 CHR-HN-002 is a hydrogenated nitrile rubber compound with documented mechanical, high-temperature and Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD) performance. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Hardness: 88.9 Shore A Tensile Strength: 4748 psi Elongation at Break: 171% Tear Resistance: 59.0 kgf/cm Specific Gravity: 1.280 Compression Set: 14% after 22 h at 150°C Low-Temperature Resistance: Tested at -40°C The compound has been independently tested for Rapid Gas Decompression resistance according to ISO 23936-2:2011 Annex B. RGD test conditions: 90 mol% CH₄ / 10 mol% CO₂, 150 bar, 100°C and eight decompression cycles. The tested CHR-HN-002 specimens achieved PASS with ISO section ratings of 0000. Note: The RGD test was performed on CHR-HN-002 O-ring specimens. The result therefore demonstrates the RGD resistance of the elastomer compound under the stated test conditions and should not be interpreted as qualification of every complete bonded seal assembly. ETHYLENE PROPYLENE DIENE RUBBER (EPDM) Compound Ref.: EP00172A Hardness Range: 65–75 Shore A Specification: ASTM D2000 M2AA708A13B13C12EA14F17 EP00172A is an EPDM compound with documented heat ageing, water resistance, compression set, ozone resistance and low-temperature performance. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Hardness: 72.4 Shore A Tensile Strength: 1634 psi Elongation at Break: 258% Tear Resistance: 33.7 kgf/cm Specific Gravity: 1.177 Compression Set: 10% after 22 h at 70°C Ozone Resistance: PASS according to ASTM D1149 Low-Temperature Resistance: PASS at -40°C according to ASTM D2137 Heat resistance has been tested according to ASTM D573 at 70°C, 100°C and 125°C. Water resistance has been tested using distilled water according to ASTM D471. TECHNICAL NOTE The properties stated above apply to the specific compounds referenced. Material performance may vary depending on the actual compound, medium, temperature, pressure and application conditions. Compound-specific test reports and material documentation are available on request. 3 STEMA Bonded Seals Technical Catalogue
