FKM vs FFKM
Learn when FKM or FFKM may be appropriate for demanding seal applications.
FKM is a family of fluorocarbon elastomers widely used in sealing applications involving oils, fuels and heat.
FFKM is a perfluoroelastomer family developed for demanding chemical and thermal environments. Performance varies significantly between compounds.
Neither material is universally resistant to every chemical. Certain amines, ketones, steam conditions and other media can require a specific compound or another material.
Compare actual chemical concentration, temperature, pressure, exposure duration, compression set and certification requirements before choosing. FFKM's higher cost should be justified by the application.
Compare the exact compounds
Choose FKM or FFKM by chemical, concentration, temperature and duty. For example, both families can resist ozone well, so that requirement alone does not justify changing to FFKM. Other chemicals and the exact compound may change the assessment.
Does a short-term test prove continuous service capability?
No. Temperature, exposure duration, medium and compression must be distinguished. Read the specific FFKM datasheet and confirm actual duty before ordering.
