ED Seals and DIN 3869

How to identify ED seals by thread, dimensions and material for static threaded joints.

ED seals are profile seals designed for static threaded connections. DIN 3869 is a commonly referenced standard for this seal type.

Identify the seal by fitting thread, existing reference and relevant profile dimensions. Metric and BSP references must be checked against the actual connection.

Elastomer choice depends on the medium and operating conditions. NBR and FKM are common options; other materials may be available by request.

A nominal thread size alone does not establish the correct seal. Check the seating geometry and dimensional table before ordering.

Measurement example: M20 × 1.5

The STEMA table lists ED20 for M20 × 1.5 with ID 17.8 mm, OD 22.9 mm, T 1.5 mm and T1 0.8 mm. Thread size alone does not confirm profile suitability. Compare the dimensional drawing and seating geometry before ordering.

Can a bonded seal replace an ED seal?

This must be assessed for the connection. Different profiles, compression and seating geometry can prevent interchangeability even with the same thread size.
